Built in 1965, Professional Plaza Detroit was conceived as a premier hub for medical, legal, and corporate offices in downtown Detroit. Reflecting the optimism of the early-to-mid 1960s, the building quickly became a defining presence in the city's professional landscape. In the 1980s, it became locally known as the "Hammer & Nail Building," named for the iconic neon sign installed by the Carpenters and Millwrights Union, whose offices occupied the upper floors.

Roxbury Group acquired the property in 2015, saving it from demolition, securing its placement on the National Register of Historic Places, and completing a full adaptive reuse into 72 apartments with ground-floor retail. Rebranded as Plaza Midtown, the redevelopment honored the Hammer & Nail legacy through a first-floor bar bearing the building's unofficial name and showcasing the original neon sign.

The Plaza Detroit - Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy will be Roxbury's second adaptive-reuse of this iconic building and will offer an engaging residential hotel experience that celebrates Detroit's mid-century modern design legacy. In addition to the appointment of the hotel's planned 92 apartments, the re-launched property will incorporate the Hammer & Nail bar into the guest experience, seamlessly connecting the building's historic character with contemporary hospitality.
